简介
There are two senses of the word “ethics,” first, referring to the guiding reasons or principles for one’s (morally relevant) actions. And second, referring to the field of study of such reasons and principles. This lecture will consider several possible grounds for believing that ethics, in one or other of these senses, is not important, and will show that these grounds do not stand up to critical examination. Instead, it will argue that ethics is important in both of these senses, and that, especially today, because of the immense amount of avoidable suffering that exists in the world, ethics is even more important than it was in earlier times. That trend, for ethics to increase in importance, can be expected to continue as new technologies develop and raise further ethical problems.

This paper challenges reason-responsiveness theories (RRT) of moral responsibility by examining the threat posed by situationism. RRT holds that moral responsibility depends on an agent's ability to recognize and respond to reasons. However, situationist experiments show that minor situational factors often influence ordinary behavior in ways that undermine reason-responsiveness. The paper critiques John Fischer's version of RRT, identifying the empirical applicability problem (EAP) and the Irrelevance Challenge, which highlight the disconnect between RRT's theoretical claims and real-world behavior. Further possible defense from RRT, especially a kind of Modal Response, is considered and refuted. I conclude that RRT cannot adequately address the situationist threat and suggests a need for a forward-looking revision of responsibility theory.
