In today's globalized era, cross-cultural communication skills have become an essential ability for every student. To help students better understand each other and reduce minor misunderstandings in communication, the ZWA Division recently held an innovative class meeting with the theme "Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood to Reduce Conflicts." This class focused on experiential learning, allowing students to learn cross-cultural communication in a joyful setting.

Tribal Grouping and Cultural Co-Creation
At the beginning, the classroom transformed into a lively "tribal gathering." Students were divided into two "tribes," each with a distinct way of greeting. The Owl Tribe was a group that communicated through friendly physical contact, with members greeting each other by gently patting shoulders and avoiding direct eye contact. In contrast, the Dolphin Tribe completely avoided physical contact, preferring to communicate through words or eye contact. Each student drew an animal totem card and quickly assumed their roles.

Next, the “tribal leaders” guided everyone into the "co-creating tribal culture" segment. Students enthusiastically discussed the special significance of greeting methods in tribal culture. Is it a legacy of history or a reflection of values? How does this method express respect and friendliness? Does it even help build better relationships in daily life? These questions sparked students' creativity and deepened their understanding of their own "tribal culture." However, the teacher kept the results of these discussions a secret for the time being.

Simulated Encounters and Conflict Discussion
Next, the classroom transformed into a simulated "cultural exchange arena." Students from the two tribes moved freely around the classroom, simulating encounter scenarios. As expected, some interesting "cultural conflicts" and misunderstandings arose during the class. This provided rich material for the discussion session. Students actively participated, sharing instances of communication breakdowns due to cultural differences, expressing their feelings, and attempting to analyze the causes of conflicts and misunderstandings in communication. They also explored how better understanding could help avoid these issues.

Video Learning and Reflection

對於避免誤解的方法,視頻中提到的其中一個要點是“take time to understand as you try to be understood”(知彼解己)。
To further deepen their understanding, students watched a video titled "How Miscommunication Happens." This video explained the potential factors that lead to misunderstandings in communication. One of the key points mentioned in the video for avoiding misunderstandings was "take time to understand as you try to be understood." At this moment, the teacher invited the two tribal leaders to demonstrate and explain the reasons behind their tribes' distinctly different greeting methods. It turned out that these seemingly simple actions had profound cultural backgrounds and meanings. If time is taken to understand each other's culture and perspectives before an encounter, unnecessary conflicts might be avoided.

The ZWIE Group and ZWIS are dedicated to cultivating globally competent talents. In this increasingly globalized world, it is particularly important to have individuals who can understand and adapt to different cultural backgrounds. The core of cross-cultural communication lies in understanding others before being understood. Through such cross-cultural experiential activities, students can not only gain an initial understanding of the world's diversity and enhance their cross-cultural communication skills but also bring new perspectives to resolving conflicts in daily interactions and among adolescents. By understanding and respecting different cultural backgrounds, students can better manage disagreements and establish more harmonious interpersonal relationships. These abilities will enable them to navigate future international environments with ease.
