Making a Mark on the Boat
Long ago, there was a man from theState of Chu who valued his sword very much. One day, he was taking a boat across the river. But he dropped his sword into the water carelessly.
Immediately he took out a knife and made a mark on the body of the boat. He muttered,“the sword dropped here.” People on the boat didn’t know why he did that. They all suggested he should quickly search his sword out of the river. But the man answered,“Don’t worry! I have the mark here.”
The boat moved on. Someone urged him again, “go and get your sword back, or the boat will go farther, and you will never find it!” But the man didn’t care at all. He insisted that he can find it with the help of the mark.
When the boat stopped, the man jumped into the water from where the mark was. He searched for a long time but in vain.
As we all know, the boat moved but the sword didn’t move at all.
This is today’s idiom story. It reminds us to think about the possible changes when we try to solve a problem.
