Thirty-five people were dead after a man drove an SUV into dozens exercising outside at a sports center in Zhuhai, South China’s Guangdong province, local police announced Tuesday.
The suspect, a 62-year-old man surnamed Fan, drove into the interior of Zhuhai Sports Center around 7:48 p.m. on Monday and started hitting people with his car, district police said in a statement. Forty-three others were left injured.珠海警方在11月11日夜间通报称，当日晚上7时48分许，一辆小汽车在香洲区体育中心撞倒多名行人后驾车逃逸，肇事司机是62岁樊某，已被警方控制。伤者被送往医院救治。
The police said Fan’s actions stemmed from “dissatisfaction with the outcome of his divorce property settlement,” given preliminary investigations including witness testimonies and video surveillance footage.Fan fled the scene and was found in the SUV while self-harming with a knife. He suffered “severe injuries” to his neck and passed out, the police statement said. Fan has not been questioned by the police as he is still receiving medical treatment.

The Zhuhai Sports Center’s outdoor areas are frequented by local residents who dance, run and walk on weekday nights.On the night of the incident, six groups of power walkers — an activity popular among the elderly — with around 10 to 50 people each, were present, a group member surnamed Chen told Caixin.
A nearby resident surnamed Liu who was also at the scene estimated that at least 30 people were injured, with the majority being middle-aged and elderly. Children were also among the injured, he told Caixin.据陈先生回忆，他所在的队伍刚走完第三圈，肇事汽车突然从队伍后边冲过来，速度很快，不少人被撞倒，他及时跳开得以幸免。家住体育中心附近的刘先生每天都会去中心锻炼，事发当晚也在现场。据他估计，倒地伤者至少有三四十人，其中有人流血不止。现场有人在帮助伤者做心肺复苏。伤者以中老年人居多，他看到也有小孩受伤。
President Xi Jinping expressed grave concern following the incident, calling it an “extremely malicious act,” according to a report from state-run Xinhua News Agency.Xi called on all regions and relevant departments to take proactive measures to address disputes and conflicts promptly, and “to strengthen prevention and control of risks at the source.”In the Xinhua report, Premier Li Qiang underscored the importance of rescuing the injured, handling the aftermath, investigating the incident and punishing the perpetrator. He stressed the need to identify and resolve hidden risks and social conflicts to ensure social stability.

Videos circulating online show the SUV ploughing through one power walking group before making a sharp turn towards another group, leaving dozens lying on the ground.Liu said he saw people injured in various areas of the walking path after the vehicle went around the stadium knocking people down. Ambulances arrived quickly but it took them over an hour to attend to all the injured due to the large number, he added.“撞了一圈，体育场环形跑道东南西北各片区域都有人受伤。”刘先生说。他在现场看到，救护车很快赶到，但由于伤者众多，直到一个多小时后，救护车才将所有伤者接走。
The injured were sent to four hospitals nearby, Caixin learned from Zhuhai Emergency Medical Rescue Center. Earlier this year, a bus rammed into a crowd near a middle school in Taian in East China’s Shandong province, killing 11 people, as the fall term began in September. In March, another car careered into a group of schoolchildren in Dezhou, Shandong, killing two and injuring six.
