Measurement of Vessels
The Yellow Emperor said, "I would like to hear about the measurement of the vessels."
Qi Bo replied, "The six yang vessels of the hand, stretching from the hand to the head, are five chi long. Five multiplied by six is three zhang.
The six yin vessels of the hand, stretching from the hand to the chest, are three chi and five cun long. Three times six is one zhang and eight chi, and five times six is three chi, totaling two zhang and one chi.
The six yang vessels of the foot, stretching from the foot to the head, are eight chi long. Six times eight is four zhang and eight chi.
The six yin vessels of the foot, stretching from the foot to the chest, are six chi and five cun long. Six times six is three zhang and six chi, and five times six is three chi, totaling three zhang and nine chi.
The Qiao vessels, stretching from the foot to the eye, are seven chi and five cun long. Two times seven is one zhang and four chi, and two times five is one chi, totaling one zhang and five chi.
The Du vessel and the Ren vessel are each four chi and five cun long. Two times four is eight chi, and two times five is one chi, totaling nine chi.
Altogether, they amount to sixteen zhang and two chi. These are the major passages for qi. The regular meridians are on the inside, the branches that run transversely are the collaterals, and the branches of the collaterals are the minute collaterals (Sun Luo).
When the minute collaterals are excessive and there is blood stasis, it should be promptly treated. When there is excess, it should be purged; when there is deficiency, medicine should be taken for supplementation.
The five zang-organs constantly communicate with the seven orifices above. Thus, the lung qi communicates with the nose. When the lung is in harmony, the nose can perceive odors.
The heart qi communicates with the tongue. When the heart is in harmony, the tongue can perceive the five flavors.
The liver qi communicates with the eyes. When the liver is in harmony, the eyes can distinguish the five colors.
The spleen qi communicates with the mouth. When the spleen is in harmony, the mouth can perceive the five grains.
The kidney qi communicates with the ears. When the kidney is in harmony, the ears can perceive the five sounds.
When the five zang-organs are not in harmony, the seven orifices will be blocked; when the six fu-organs are not in harmony, it will result in abscesses.
Therefore, when pathogenic factors are in the fu-organs, the yang vessels will be disharmonious. When the yang vessels are disharmonious, qi will be retained. When qi is retained, yang qi will become excessive.
When yang qi is too excessive, yin will be impaired. When the yin vessels are impaired, blood will be retained. When blood is retained, yin qi will become excessive.
When yin qi is too excessive, yang qi cannot nourish, so it is called "guan". When yang qi is too excessive, yin qi cannot nourish, so it is called "ge".
When both yin and yang are excessive and cannot nourish each other, it is called "guan ge". Those with guan ge will die before their expected lifespan is over.
The Yellow Emperor asked, "Where do the Qiao vessels originate and terminate? What qi nourishes them?"
Qi Bo replied, "The Qiao vessels are the branches of the Shaoyin. They originate from behind the Ran Gu.
They ascend above the medial malleolus, ascend straight along the medial aspect of the thigh, enter the external genitalia, ascend along the chest, enter the supraclavicular fossa, ascend and emerge in front of the Ren Ying, enter the cheek, belong to the medial canthus of the eye, combine with the Taiyang and Yang Qiao and ascend. When the qi converges and circulates, it moistens the eyes. When the qi does not nourish, the eyes cannot close."
The Yellow Emperor asked, "The qi only travels through the five zang-organs and does not nourish the six fu-organs. Why is that?"
Qi Bo replied, "The qi cannot but circulate, just like the flow of water, like the movement of the sun and the moon without ceasing.
Therefore, the yin vessels nourish the zang - organs, and the yang vessels nourish the fu-organs. It is like a ring without an end, and no one knows its order. It begins again after ending, and the overflowing qi irrigates the zang-organs and fu-organs internally and moistens the striae of the skin and muscles externally."
The Yellow Emperor asked, "The Qiao vessels have yin and yang. Which vessels are counted as the regular meridians?"
Qi Bo said, "For men, the yang vessels are counted; for women, the yin vessels are counted. The ones that are counted are the regular meridians, and the ones that are not counted are the collaterals."
