Bioconversion of one-carbon compounds

Currently, the greenhouse effect and climate change, driven by the extensive use of fossil resources, have an extremely prominent impact on human life and activities. In this context, finding clean and renewable resources has become critically important. One-carbon (C1) compounds such as CO2, CH4, methanol, and formate are promising alternative raw materials to replace fossil resources and reduce carbon emissions. The C1-based biotechnology offers a green and sustainable approach for the conversion of C1 compounds to biofuels and chemicals using C1-utilizing enzymes, C1-utilizing pathways, and C1-utilizing microorganisms, which represent a powerful route to form a sustainable carbon cycle in a circular bioeconomy. C1-utilizing enzymes are used to incorporate C1 molecules into organic compounds. C1-utilizing pathways are utilized for transmitting C1 molecules into central carbon metabolism. C1-utilizing microorganisms are engineered into C1-utilizing cell factories by metabolic engineering and synthetic biology strategies to produce high-value bioproducts with C1 molecules as carbon sources. The C1-based biotechnology not only promotes the advancement of carbon capture, utilization, and storage, but also presents a good basis for third-generation biorefineries.
