In the time of the Taiyuan era of the Jin Dynasty, there was a fisherman from Wuling who made a living by fishing. One day, he rowed along the stream and forgot about the distance he had traveled.
Suddenly, he came upon a peach blossom forest that stretched for several hundred paces along both banks, with no other trees mixed in. The grass was lush and beautiful, and fallen petals were scattered everywhere.
The fisherman was very surprised and continued to move forward, wishing to explore the end of the forest.
When he reached the end of the forest, he found a mountain with a small opening that seemed to emit light. He left his boat and entered through the opening.
At first, it was very narrow, barely wide enough for a person to pass through. After walking dozens of steps, he suddenly found himself in a broad and open space.
The land was flat and vast, with houses neatly arranged, and there were fertile fields, beautiful ponds, and mulberry and bamboo. Paths crisscrossed, and the sounds of chickens and dogs could be heard.
The men and women who passed by were dressed like people from outside, and even the old and the young were content and at ease.
When they saw the fisherman, they were greatly astonished and asked where he came from. He answered them in detail. They invited him to their homes and prepared wine and killed chickens to cook food.
Upon hearing about this stranger, the villagers all came to inquire.
They said that their ancestors had fled the chaos of the Qin Dynasty and had brought their wives and children to this isolated place, never to leave again, and thus they were cut off from the outside world.
When asked about the current era, they did not even know of the Han Dynasty, let alone the Wei and Jin Dynasties. The fisherman told them everything he had heard, and they all sighed with regret.
The villagers each invited him to their homes and offered him wine and food. After staying for a few days, he took his leave. The people of the village told him, "Do not speak of this place to outsiders."
After he left, he found his boat and followed the path back, marking the way at every turn.
When he arrived at the county seat, he went to the prefect and told him the story. The prefect immediately sent people to follow him, but they lost their way and could not find the path again.
Liu Ziji from Nanyang was a noble man who, upon hearing of this, was eager to go there. However, he did not succeed, and soon after, he fell ill and died. After that, no one else inquired about the place.
