Traditional juanren, also called silk figurine, is in fact a type of soft artistic puppet. It first appeared during the Han Dynasty and were popular for centuries. However, after the Qing Dynasty, their production gradually declined and the craft was on the verge of extinction. Until 1954, a few artists drew extensively from ethnic groups, classical literature, historical stories, and characters from traditional operas and dances, managing to revive the art of juanren.
