Not in Viet Nam and Taiwan, Foxconn's largest Nvidia GB200 chip factory was built in Mexico
Editor: Lucien
Foxconn executives said Tuesday (Oct. 8) that the company is building the world's largest Nvidia GB200 chip manufacturing plant in Mexico to meet the huge demand for Blackwell chips in the artificial intelligence market. Foxconn has established a large production base in Mexico and has invested more than $500 million in Chihuahua to date.
The GB200 is a superchip based on NVIDIA's next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) chip architecture, Blackwell, which is a key component of NVIDIA's next-generation Blackwell series of computing platforms. Nvidia said in August that it had begun shipping samples of Blackwell chips to partners and customers after tweaking the design, and expected the chips to bring in billions of dollars in revenue in the fourth quarter.
Ding Zhaobang, senior vice president of Foxconn's cloud enterprise solutions business unit, said that Foxconn is building the world's largest GB200 manufacturing plant. At the same time, he pointed out that the cooperation between Foxconn and Nvidia is very important, everyone wants Nvidia's Blackwell chips, and the market demand is "extremely huge". Foxconn's third-quarter revenue hit its highest level ever, driven by strong demand for AI servers.
Liu Yangwei, chairman of Hon Hai, then told the media that Foxconn will be the first company in the world to mass-produce and ship Nvidia GB200AI chips, and the factory is under Mexico construction, and the production capacity will be "very, very huge". He said Foxconn's supply chain is ready for the AI revolution, and the company's manufacturing capabilities include advanced liquid cooling and cooling technologies, "which are necessary to complement the GB200 server infrastructure."
In addition, NVIDIA's official website shows that its Blackwell supercomputing center built in cooperation with Hon Hai has started construction in Kaohsiung, Taiwan Province, China. The first phase of the project is expected to be operational in mid-2025 and full deployment in 2026.
The Hon Hai and NVIDIA collaboration will be built around the Blackwell architecture and will feature GB200NVL72 cabinets, with a total of 64 racks and 4,608 TensorCore GPUs on the platform.
Hon Hai plans to produce 20,000 NVIDIA NVL72 cabinets by 2025. Liu Yangwei said that Hon Hai's vertical integration capabilities, which include the advanced liquid cooling and cooling technologies required to support the GB200 server infrastructure, will be based on the GB200 chip. In other words, NVIDIA's Blackwell chip will become the core of Hon Hai's Kaohsiung supercomputing center.
Previously, the industry believed that Hon Hai would allow Foxconn to build the most important NVIDIA superchip and cabinet production base in Taiwan or Viet Nam, because Foxconn's large-scale industrial park in Mexico has been built for a long time, but it has not been launched on a large scale, leading the industry to believe that Hon Hai's investment in Mexico has encountered difficulties and resistance.
Last year, Mr. Huang visited Viet Nam for the first time to discuss cooperation agreements in the semiconductor field with local technology companies and the government, and the government released information showing that Nvidia has committed to building a manufacturing base in Viet Nam, with an estimated investment of 250 million US dollars (about 1.8 billion yuan).
In August, it was reported that Google was considering building a "hyperscale" data center near Ho Chi Minh City, the economic center of southern Viet Nam, an investment that would give Viet Nam a shot in the arm because Viet Nam has so far failed to attract significant overseas capital to invest in its data centers due to poor infrastructure.
In Southeast Asia, in addition to NVIDIA, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella (Satya Nadella) announced that it will invest $2.2 billion in ·Malaysia and $1.7 billion in Indonesia to build cloud services; Amazon announced plans to invest US$9 billion in Singapore, US$5 billion in Thailand and US$6 billion in Malaysia; Google has announced that it will invest US$2 billion in Malaysia to develop its first data center and Google Cloud region in the country. These investments require a large number of AI superchips and cabinet production capacity to match.
And the follow-up AI server supply chain companies including Foxconn, Hongteng Precision, and Victory Giant Technology have announced the expansion of production capacity in Viet Nam, so the industry believes that Foxconn may also put Nvidia's super chip production in Viet Nam.
At the current three-day "AI Summit" in Washington, D.C., United States, Nvidia Enterprise Platform Vice President and General Manager Bob Pette talked about "the next phase of artificial intelligence." The world is now on the "verge of seeing more industry adoption", with AI expected to have an impact of up to $20 trillion across all industries that leverage the technology.
At the same time, the next-generation Blackwell chips will be shipped to customers in the fourth quarter of this year and are energy efficient. Since Tuesday, tech giants, including Microsoft and OpenAI, have begun to display and receive new B200 chip servers.
When Mr. Jensen Huang, the head of Nvidia, briefed the media not long ago, he also summed up the current situation of the industry's demand for B200 chips in one word: "crazy"! "Everybody wants to have the most chips, everybody wants to be the first to have them."
Mr. Huang said that the price of chips is expected to be between $30,000 and $40,000, and the supplier's (TSMC) production line is also running at full capacity.
According to the information obtained from the Rising Sun Big Data, it is expected that the output of Blackwell chips should be about 250,000 to 300,000 pieces in the fourth quarter of this year, double to about 500,000 pieces in the first quarter of next year, and rise to 1 million pieces by the end of next year.
Foxconn's announcement to build the world's largest GB200 super chip factory in Mexico does not mean that Foxconn's investment in Viet Nam and the construction of AI servers have slowed down. From the perspective of customer orders and supply chain supporting actions, Viet Nam will also become the same production capacity center as Taiwan and Mexico in the field of AI cabinets and servers in the future.
