The United Nations University Institute in Macau (hereinafter “UNU Macau”) is delighted to offer a researcher training programme in 2023, providing an exceptional interdisciplinary platform for interested students to increase their expertise and research abilities. Researchers across different disciplines from the UNU Macau and external guest researchers from the UNU network will undertake courses together.



Theme


The 2023 UNU Macau Digital Tech & SDGs Researcher Training Programme will be organized from 10 July to 18 August on the overarching theme of Digital Technology & Health. The training programme is designed to provide an opportunity for students to increase their professional expertise and knowledge, as well as interdisciplinary research abilities about the overarching theme and one of the following five sub-themes: 


1. Agent-based Modelling to Support Better Health Policies


2. Mental Health: Exploring the Psychological Implications of Digital Technologies on Well-being


3. Decoding Development Dilemmas


4. Exploring Global Health: Opportunities and Challenges of an Interconnected World


5. Public Health Challenges and Communication

Provisional

Programme

The 2023 UNU Macau Digital Tech & SDGs Researcher Training Programme will begin with a five-week online training, from 10 July to 11 August 2023, followed by a one-week face-to-face training from 14 to 18 August 2023 in UNU Macau (Casa Silva Mendes, Estrada do Engenheiro Trigo No 4, Macau SAR, China).

Tuition fee will include all cost related to learning, food and lodging. Applicants are responsible for fees related to visa application, transportation, health insurance and other related personal expenses. At the same time, applicants can apply for scholarships.



/ Online Training/

Students will be divided into five different thematic groups based on their ranking interests for the online training. During the online training, students are required to complete weekly tasks, including but not limited to reading reference materials and attending online lectures and discussions under the direct mentorship of UNU Macau researchers. The provisional programme for the online training is as follow:

Upon completion of the training, participating students are required to develop and deliver two outputs: 

1. Group research papers/products

2. Group presentations on policy proposals for future

Eligibility Requirements

UNU Macau Researcher Training Programme

1. The students will be selected according to the registration information. Interdisciplinary student teams and individualsfrom from all countries of all majors and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.

2. Be interested in international topics related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

3. Be interested in research, further study or work in international organizations.

4. Be a master’s degree student or PhD student.

5. Be able to study and communicate in English.

 Bio of Teachers




Jingbo Huang

Director

UNU Macau

Dr. Jingbo Huang is currently the Director of the United Nations University Research Institute in Macau. She has 20 years of UN working experience. She has held various managerial positions in the UN Secretariat, UNDP, UNESCO, UNSSC and UNU. Jingbo received her Doctor of Education degree from Columbia University. She also holds a Master’s degree from Institut d’Etudes de Grenoble, France, and the second Master’s degree from Indiana University-Bloomington. She graduated from Peking University, with Bachelor degrees in Economics and French. She has been a career advisor and visiting professor at the Sun Yat-sen University since 2007.


Serge Stinckwich

Head of Research

UNU Macau

Serge is a computer scientist and the Head of Research at the United Nations University Institute in Macau. Over the years, Serge Stinckwich developed an innovative research program about modelling and simulation of complex systems at the intersection of several scientific disciplines applied to developing countries’ issues. His research interests are domain-specific languages and tools that ease the tasks of non-computer experts to model, simulate and analyse complex systems. He has applied his work to Epidemiology, Environmental Monitoring and Disaster Management.


Jaimee Stuart

Senior Researcher

UNU Macau

Jaimee is a Cultural and Developmental Psychologist and Senior Researcher at the United Nations University Institute in Macau. Her research focuses on positive development for children, youth and their families. She is particularly interested in understanding developmental processes as they play out in contemporary contexts – those where there is extensive connection and engagement with technology, exposure to diversity, and experiences of global health and climate risks.


Franz Gatzweiler

Senior Research Advisor

UNU Macau

Franz is Senior Research Advisor at the United Nations University Institute in Macau. Before joining UNU-Macau, he was a Professor at the Institute of Urban Environment, Chinese Academy of Science in Xiamen and executive director of the global science programme on Urban Health and Wellbeing: A Systems Approach, which is an affiliated body of the International Science Council (ISC). He established links between the Department of Resource Economics under Professor Konrad Hagedorn and the (Vincent and Elinor) Ostrom Workshop in Bloomington, Indiana University, which collaborated in research on the institutional transition process of Central and Eastern European countries. 


Cara Antonaccio

Researcher

UNU Macau

Cara’s research is focused on health and development in conflict-affected communities using epidemiological and geospatial analysis methods to investigate the dynamics of complex humanitarian crises. In 2022, she earned a PhD from Boston College. Since joining the UNU Institute in Macau, Cara is increasingly motivated to conduct applied interdisciplinary research and to design data-driven tools to support health in humanitarian crises and for communities affected by conflict and other forms of adversity.


Min Yang

Researcher

UNU Macau

Min is passionate about building a sustainable and peaceful future for all through knowledge generating and sharing. Min undertook a series of programmes at global and regional levels for empowering young women and men, enhancing social inclusion centered on gender, as well as promoting peace education and peacebuilding. Min has experience of working in different media organizations as a journalist and editor. She holds a bachelor of information management and information system, a master of journalism and communication, and a PhD of communication studies.

The United Nations University Institute in Macau is a UN global think tank on Information Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D). Part of the UN family and the UNU network, the Institute works with UN Member States, UN entities, regional bodies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), academia, and the private sector to explore how digital technologies can be leveraged for sustainable development. The Institute remains a neutral body within the UN system and exercises its academic freedom to bring forward research evidence for decision-making. It is also mandated to educate the next generation of ICT4D talent from the Global South.
