Therefore, the state of utmost sincerity is unceasing.
When it is unceasing, it endures; when it endures, it shows manifestations.
When it shows manifestations, it reaches far and wide. When it reaches far and wide, it becomes broad and profound. When it is broad and profound, it becomes lofty and brilliant.
Being broad and profound, it is capable of carrying things. Being lofty and brilliant, it is capable of covering things. Being far-reaching and enduring, it is capable of perfecting things.
The quality of being broad and profound is comparable to that of the earth. The quality of being lofty and brilliant is comparable to that of the sky. The quality of being far-reaching and enduring is boundless.
One who is like this can become manifest without being seen, can bring about change without moving, and can achieve accomplishment without taking any action.
The way of heaven and earth can be summed up in one sentence. It is single-minded in dealing with things, and thus its creation of things is unfathomable.
The way of heaven and earth is characterized by being broad, profound, lofty, brilliant, far-reaching, and enduring.
Now, take the sky for example. It may seem to consist of just so many bright patches, but when considering its infinitude, the sun, moon, and stars are suspended in it, and all things are covered by it.
Now, take the earth for example. It may seem to consist of just a handful of soil, but when considering its vastness and thickness, it can carry Mount Hua without feeling the burden, hold the rivers and seas without leaking, and carry all things.
Now, take the mountains for example. They may seem to consist of just so many rolled-up stones, but when considering their expanse, grasses and trees grow on them, birds and beasts live in them, and treasures are hidden in them.
Now, take the water for example. It may seem to consist of just a spoonful, but when considering its unfathomableness, turtles, alligators, dragons, fish, and turtles live in it, and wealth is generated in it.
The Book of Songs says, "The Mandate of Heaven, how solemn and ceaseless!" This probably means what makes the sky the sky.
"How illustrious! The purity of King Wen's virtue." This probably means what makes King Wen known as 'Wen'. Purity is also ceaseless.
