I》 YOU SAY YOU LIKE IT PALE I , 2021Giclee on matte art paper and aluminum panel《郭盈光》将呈现郭盈光继其相亲角行为影像作品《顺从的幸福》于公共话语领域引发激烈讨论后的全新创作。
FREEZE YOUR EGGSFREE YOUR LIFE (part) , Wood board, egg skinThe attention whore who hunts at matchmaking cornerSomeone who deserves what she gotSomeone who is looking for true loveStrong, independent, woman-like, but not too woman-like …

GUO YINGGUANG presents a new body of works by Yingguang Guo after her matchmaking corner performance/image series The Bliss of Conformity stirred up drastic discussions in the public sphere. Since 2018, Guo has been experimenting with media and concepts to embody the ambiguous moments of being the target of public opinions toward female identity. She was regarded as the voice of feminism, exposed to the contradictory identities endorsed by the Internet. More directly and dramatically, she's been receiving countless e-courtship letters from strange men around the globe. An intermedium of becoming and anti-becoming a woman, GUO YINGGUANG incarnates the artist's search for answers to the question: Who exactly am I (is the female) under the layered facade of multiple identities?Combining sculpture, installation, video and photography, the exhibition builds an eerie and mysterious stage to explore the ongoing self-creation of the female under social sanction, and to present the tension between dream and violence. This is Yingguang Guo’s first solo exhibition after her last one at Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, 2019.Born in Northeast China in the 1980s, Yingguang Guo started her artist career taking herself as the object and method of practice. She was awarded the first Jimei Arles Madame Figaro Women Photographer Award with the highly controversial series The Bliss of Conformity. This two-year-long matchmaking corner performance project revealed contradictions between traditional ethics and individual experience faced by women in the contemporary Chinese marriage market, and has triggered a viral response on YouTube and multiple domestic media platforms. As a result, Guo has received hundreds of e-courtship letters and direct messages questioning her identity as a "leftover woman". These comments and public attention are still increasing to this day, foreshadowing the solo exhibition GUO YINGGUANG."If there is anything right about Beauvoir's statement that a person is not born a woman, but becomes a woman, then women themselves are a term about processes, a generation, a construction, which cannot correctly say its origin or end. As an ongoing discursive practice, it remains open to intervention and redefinition." (Judith Butler, Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity) In the current scene where opinions about feminism predominate, Yingguang Guo's work candidly responds to specific issues such as egg freezing, privacy, online violence, gender relations and women's empowerment. An experiencer and observer, these pieces are to project the introspection and resistance of the female others in the process of socialization. For example, in the installation YOU SAY YOU LIKE IT PALE in the center of the main gallery, Guo assembled 10,000 slices of soap and steel structures into a Rococo-style chandelier with a diameter of 200 centimeters. Self-reconstruction, discipline and negation in the gaze of the Others coexist throughout the refreshingly pure and labor-intensive process of soap beading. The appearance of soap and chandelier in the context of female experience intends to challenge the audience's cognition of the objects' function and original implication, a metaphor for the increasingly blurred yet polarized identities of contemporary women.《你说你喜欢白的》 YOU SAY YOU LIKE IT PALE , 2022With the gaze recursing in the form of peeping, 38 CLUB recreates the female image defined by mainstream standards, while segments of the woman's body are torn and healed in the non-linear sequence of photography, pastel painting and video. FREEZE YOUR EGGS FREE YOUR LIFE brings issues related to the autonomy of egg freezing back to the horizon through peeled eggshells. The propaganda-slogan-styled title deliberately confuses its subject; Is egg-freezing indeed a need for self-actualization of women in specific circles and life stages, or is it just another explicit price tag in the disguise of "freedom" in the commodity economy? In contrast, PUFF is a direct outcome of the traumatic experience through social media of the artist's own. The chewed sunflower seeds and bullet-screen crisscross in Mozart's Requiem, a joint work of the real and the virtual thus composed. Meanwhile, accompanied by the faint, unceasing sound of a typewriter, a faceless long-haired lady on the second floor of the gallery turns her back to us uncannily.
