The Sign of Complete Virtue
In the state of Lu, there was a man named Wang Tai who had his feet cut off. The number of people who followed him was about the same as that of those who followed Confucius.
Chang Ji asked Confucius, saying, "Wang Tai was a man whose one foot had been cut off. However, the number of people who followed him to study in the state of Lu was comparable to that of your disciples, sir. He neither teaches when standing nor discusses when sitting.
孔子的学生常季向孔子问道;“王骀是个被砍去了一只脚的人,在鲁国跟从他学习的人却和先生的弟子相当。他站着不能教诲他人,坐着不能议论大事;
是何人也?”People go to him with emptiness and return with fullness. Is there really such a thing as teaching without words and the accomplishment of the mind without form? What kind of person is he?"
Confucius said, "That man is a sage. I am just slow in going to him! I am going to take him as my teacher, let alone those who are not as good as I am! Not only in the state of Lu, but I will lead the whole world to follow him."
若然者,其用心也,独若之何?”Chang Ji said, "He is a man with his one foot cut off, yet he is superior to you, sir. He must be far different from the ordinary people. In that case, how does he use his mind?"
仲尼曰:“死生亦大矣,而不得与之变;虽天地覆坠,亦将不与之遗;Confucius said, "Life and death are indeed significant matters, yet he does not change with them; even if the heaven and the earth were to collapse, he would not be lost along with them;
He examines the state of being without reliance and does not change with things, commands the transformation of things and guards their origin."
Chang Ji said, "What do you mean?"
Confucius said, "When looking at things from the perspective of their differences, the liver and the gall are as far apart as Chu and Yue; when looking at them from the perspective of their similarities, all things are one.
For one who is like this, he does not even know what is suitable for the ears and eyes, but lets his mind roam in the harmony of virtue. He sees the oneness of things and does not notice what is lost. To him, losing a foot is like losing a piece of earth."
Chang Ji said, "He cultivates himself. With his wisdom, he attains his mind, and with his mind, he attains the constant mind. Why do things gather around him?"
Confucius said, "People do not use flowing water as a mirror but use still water as a mirror. Only what is still can stop the stillness of others.
受命于地,唯松柏独也正,在冬夏青青;Receiving the mandate from the earth, only the pine and cypress are upright, remaining green in winter and summer;
树木同样是禀受大地孕育,唯独松柏得到真性,因而冬夏常青;
Receiving the mandate from heaven, only Yao and Shun are upright, standing at the head of all things. Fortunately, they are able to rectify their own lives and thereby rectify the lives of all beings.
Maintain the original goals and beliefs, possess the courage of fearing nothing. Even if alone, one can bravely rush into the enemy troops like a hero.
Even those who seek fame and are able to restrain themselves are like this, let alone those who govern heaven and earth, store all things, simply lodge in the six limbs, imitate the ears and eyes, unify what is known by knowledge and whose minds have never died!
He will ascend to the heights on a chosen day, and people will follow him. How could he be willing to take worldly things as his concern!"
