The goal of this PhD project is to develop novel optimization models for the operation and investment of future power grids, guaranteeing stability at the lowest cost possible. Given that the dynamics of electricity grids with high renewable penetration are much faster than in the past, new stability challenges arise, which are not fully understood yet. This research will investigate the weak aspects but also the potential strengths of power electronics devices such as wind turbines, solar PV and battery storage, in order to support grid stability. Furthermore, cost minimization is crucial for a successful decarbonization process. Therefore, this project will develop stability-constrained optimization problems in order to achieve the most effective operational decisions, both in the short term (such as daily operation) and long term (investment decisions). Topics including voltage stability, transient stability, short-circuit levels, and converter-driven stability can be investigated, as there is some freedom to agree on the specific topic between the student and the supervisor.

Development of open-source software models
Development of rigorous mathematical models representing future electricity grids
A solid background in mathematics, programming, and electrical engineering
Fluent in English (oral and written)
Experience in writing scientific papers is a plus
