Yves Scherer

Yves Scherer was born in Switzerland in 1987 and now lives in New York. Graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in London, majoring in sculpture, his works have been widely exhibited in art institutions around the world. Scherer has won the 2015 Swiss Art Award, as well as the German Cultural Agency Board of Directors and the IAAB Beijing Travel Foundation Art Award.

Scherer's work has always explored the edge between the real and the virtual world. From his perspective, life itself is a fantasy game: the way people behave in the public, the image and persona they try to manage, and the relationship between the influence and control of celebrities and the masses, etc. He tries to express this romantic and interactive relationship between man and environment in a more immersive way. His creations often come from real social news and events. Gender identity, life experience, Hollywood culture, and public media are all topics that he is passionate about, while at the same time blurring the boundaries between virtual and real. Therefore, he often locates and reproduces the illusions in life through visual traps in his works: by splicing and fusing materials and textures, plane and three-dimensional space, nature and numbers, he presents his understanding and questioning of life and virtual culture.Yves Scherer manages to avoid the trivialization of a revival involving the broad implications of the popular genre, but instead puts it at the center of reflection and investigation, he places the tension in the social relationship of public media between the virtual and the real. The way of expressing virtual culture with traditional sculpture in Boy is also an important symbol of Scherer.

Scherer's creative medium is extremely diverse, including painting, photography, surreal sculpture and installation. His early creations are mostly two-dimensional works composed of traditional photography and digital imaging collage; while Scherer is more recently inclined to use more simple and unprocessed materials: for wood, grass, cloth, artificial fur and other materials and experiments The use of sex also makes him one of the representatives of contemporary arte povera; in addition, the way of expressing virtual culture with traditional sculpture in "Boy" is also an important symbol of Scherer.

"Indulging in heavy materialism, while interacting with the virtual, his work can be seen as a extension of Post-Internet sensibilities, with a renewed sense of maturity. The work is as much 'of the Internet' as it is 'of the real world'."

——Tomasz Kobialka

Little Cat, 2021
45 x 45.5 x 19 cm
Painted bronze
Ed 3 + 1AP

This is Scherer's latest project, which follows his usual approach to computer design by making a cute kitten figure. The hand fondling the cat’s head creates dynamics the static work. The delicate expression of the kitten and the seemingly soft fur under the spray paint treatment all present a comfortable and relaxed state, which is conflict to the thinking and criticism in previous Scherrer's works, and more is the artist's expression of personal emotion and state.

Le Cerisier, 2021

173 x 73 x 85.5 cm

Painted aluminium

There is a bigger-than-normal-size boy dressed in an outfit combining old-fashioned suspenders with modern jogging pants. He bent over, engrossed in picking flowers, with a pensive smile on his face. He was designed by computer programs, cast in aluminum, just like the chareacters in Hodler’s paintings, since his body, clothes and the flowers in his hands were all exquisitely painted. In this case, mostly people might assume reference to traditional enamel or porcelain figures. However, unlike these round decorative crafts with shiny finish, everything here is matte and sharp-edged, which almost as if it had been carved out of metal.

"Scherer is a fascinating artist exploring how contemporary desire and fantasy manifests in relation to celebrities in today’s climate of observation and publicity."

                                                                                                      ——Simon Castets

A Faithful Man, 2021

201.5 x 152 x 6.5 cm

Inkjet print, lenticular lens, acrylic glass and KT-board in wooden frame with glass frame

The work of Yves Scherer confronts the integrity of existence, in a manner that originates in antiquity and continues into the now. In both sculptural form and his lenticular works, different realities are blurred to be presented as one. Complexity orbits simplicity, encapsulated by avid desire. Perception, both biological and cultural, is questioned and dismantled as viewers reevaluate notions of depiction itself. The work is grand in both scale and means, but intimate and almost whimsical when it comes to the feeling it evokes. Polychrome aluminum, 3D-lenticulars, stainless steel, and digital printing coexist as hosts to a gamut of subjects. They touch upon love and the spiritual, from sex to fantasy and from personal history to celebrity. The big themes are grounded and made more human, while those considered trivial reach towards the eternal.

Legolas, 2018
185 x 86 x 78 cm
Painted aluminium

This work presents the perfect fictional character Legolas in the public view, based on the fairy prince in The Lord of the Rings, the shocking colors in which show the sexy Charm of the character vividly. Scherrer seeks to generate real impact from sources that are easily accessible and well known to the public. These carefully crafted characters hold important ideas of hope and humanity, in the meantime representing a good motive governed by a landscape society.

"Scherer describes the competition and aspirations attached to these socially nurtured individuals, celebrities born out of reality and driven at the same time by an individual level—all of them looking forward to self-improvement within the framework of capitalist society."

——Abaseh Mirvali

Little Mermaid, 2020
145.5 x 64.5 x 66.5 cm
Stainless steel

Little Mermaid, a stainless-steel form inspired by actress and female activist, Emma Watson. Watson, a recurring subject of his work, is an advocate for gender equality and is portrayed here as both an androgynous commanding figure and a male fantasy at the same time. In this way, the artist plays with gender stereotypes while also forming a physical manifestation of the celebrity as a glossy surface for media and audience projections.

Emma, 2018

208.5 x 156.8 cm

Lenticular print

Scherer first noticed British actress Emma Watson and used her photos to create works. Interweaving and uncertainty seem to reveal how celebrities are noticed by us from a mass media perspective. You could think of it as about staring and being stared at between Hollywood celebrities and us, but the work goes deeper into social relationships between individuals in today’s era of rapid public media development, suggesting conflicting representations of the self and the public’s imagined roles.

Johnny & Kate, 2020
126 x 38 x 13 cm
Bronze

The figurative sculpture named “Johnny&Kate” presents an intimate embrace dynamic. The whole piece is sculpted from the relatively dull material of bronze, but it is sculpted into a seemingly soft appearance: the texture of the skin, hair, clothing, all seem to be made from plasticine. This conflict relationship is also reflected in the atmosphere created by the work: in a contradiction between desire and emptiness, people's peek into the privacy of the morbid pleasure. Scherrer also tries to find transcendence in the clutter of tabloid entertainment and media news.

Boy, 2018
118 x 32 x 27 cm
Plaster

The work uses traditional sculpture to present a virtual image: the image designed on the computer is cast in plaster, and an innocent and naked boy looking up and staring. This is the result of the initial evolution of Scherer's research on masculinity and childhood archetypes, one can feel a pure temperament conveyed by the work, which is also an important symbol of Scherer's work. Based on the prototype of the little boy, the artist constantly changes materials and adds elements to recreate the works, which becomes his language.
