Want to Work for Elon Musk's Government-Efficiency Team? There's a Catch
From: The Wall Street Journal
Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy's new government-efficiency department is now soliciting applications on X. Take note: you need to subscribe to the social-media platform to apply.
President-elect Donald Trump asked Musk, who owns X, and Ramaswamy, a biotech company founder, to lead cost-cutting efforts and streamline government bureaucracy. The new group, called the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, will operate outside of the federal government, Trump has said, and will work with the White House Office of Management and Budget to implement its recommendations.
DOGE said Thursday thousands of Americans have expressed interest in helping out. Musk and Ramaswamy will review the top 1% of applicants.
“We need super high-IQ small-government revolutionaries willing to work 80+ hours per week on unglamorous cost-cutting,” the department said on X.
The department instructed interested applicants to send their résumés to the DOGE account on X via direct message. Only X premium subscribers are able to message the DOGE account. Premium subscriptions cost $8 or $16 a month in the U.S., depending on the tier selected.
Musk, the world's wealthiest man, has previously said he aims to cut federal spending by at least $2 trillion. Outside analysts have said that would be a difficult aim to achieve.
Responding to one commenter, Musk emphasized that the job wouldn't be easy.
“Indeed, this will be tedious work, make lots of enemies & compensation is zero,” he said. “What a great deal!” he added, alongside a laughing emoji.
It wasn't clear whether Musk meant the roles would be unpaid. The DOGE account didn't respond to a request for comment.
Ramaswamy, a former Republican presidential candidate, said the job stands in contrast to many government officials who “make more money than the value they create.”
Professionals in banking and medicine are no stranger to these kinds of hours, with attempts in both industries to restrict hours from exceeding 80 a week. JPMorgan Chasenow limits junior investment bankers' hours to 80 a week in most cases. Medical residents can work up to 80 hours a week when averaged over four weeks, according to guidelines implemented by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education about two decades ago.
Musk has developed a reputation as a boss who demands long work hours. In the early days of Musk's ownership of X, previously known as Twitter, he emailed staffers telling them they need to work “long hours at high intensity” or leave. Musk himself has said he works seven days a week and takes little time off.
Musk personally spent $200 million to elect Trump, The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week, citing people familiar with the matter. He is now a close ally of the president-elect.
DOGE mirrors the name of dogecoin, the cryptocurrency Musk has frequently promoted online. The price of dogecoin has surged since Musk's role with the department was announced.
