The SingCham Sustainability Forum 2024, organized by the Singapore Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China (SingCham China), concluded successfully on October 31 in Shanghai. This year’s theme, “Building Our Resilient Future: Innovations for Sustainable Living,” shed light on critical sustainability issues, addressing urgent challenges and promoting innovative, forward-looking solutions. As a national-level event, the forum highlighted the substantial progress made by both China and Singapore in sustainable development while providing an invaluable platform for industry leaders to exchange insights, share best practices, and deepen collaboration. With this initiative, SingCham continues its mission to foster and strengthen bilateral partnerships for a sustainable future.

由中国新加坡商会（SingCham China）主办的2024年可持续发展论坛于10月31日在上海圆满落幕。本届论坛的主题定为“共建有韧性的未来：可持续生活的创新力”，重点关注关键的可持续发展议题，旨在应对当前面临的紧迫挑战，推动创新及前瞻性的解决方案。作为国家级别的盛会，论坛不仅展示了中国与新加坡在可持续发展领域所取得的显著成就，也为业界领袖提供了一个宝贵的交流平台，用以分享见解、交流最佳实践，进一步深化双方的合作关系。通过此次活动，SingCham重申了其致力于促进和强化中新两国之间伙伴关系的承诺，共同为实现可持续的未来而努力。

In his welcome address, Mr. William Chang Kwang Jen, Chairman of SingCham Shanghai, reaffirmed SingCham Shanghai's commitment to sustainability and collaboration. He highlighted that the forum marks SingCham Shanghai's third sustainability event in Shanghai, focusing on cross-border partnerships and solutions to environmental challenges. With a focus on four key pillars—education and awareness, policy and regulation, sustainable finance, and cross-sector partnerships—the session aims to inspire meaningful dialogue and foster partnerships across disciplines. Finally, Mr. William Chang underscored SingCham Shanghai’s ongoing dedication to strengthening ties between Singaporean and Chinese businesses, working toward a sustainable and resilient future for all.

中国新加坡商会上海会长曾广仁先生在欢迎致辞中重申了商会对可持续发展和合作的坚定承诺。他指出，这是中国新加坡商会上海在上海举办的第三届可持续发展论坛，活动重点在于探索跨境合作与应对环境挑战的有效方案。本次会议围绕四个核心支柱展开讨论——教育与意识提升、政策与法律框架、可持续金融以及跨部门协作，旨在激发富有成效的对话，促进多领域间的合作伙伴关系。最后，曾广仁先生强调了中国新加坡商会上海在加强新加坡与中国企业间联系方面的不懈努力，致力于共同打造一个可持续且具备韧性的未来。

In her opening address, Ms. Grace Fu Hai Yien, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations Singapore, reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to supporting sustainability efforts by Singaporean companies and emphasized the importance of to both mitigating and adapting to climate change. She highlighted that partnerships among governments, businesses, and citizens are essential to driving innovative solutions for a sustainable future. Citing successful cross-border partnerships such as the Suzhou Industrial Park and the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City, Ms. Grace Fu showcased these initiatives as models of sustainable industrial development and bilateral cooperation. Recognizing the crucial role of the younger generation, Ms. Grace Fu underscored the significance of initiatives like the Singapore-China Youth Interns Exchange Scheme, which fosters cross-fertilization of ideas between talented youths. Ms. Grace Fu concluded with a call to action, stressing that close collaboration between governments and industries is more essential than ever for Singapore and China to support one another in reaching their sustainability goals.

In his remarks, Mr. Fu Jihong, Vice President of the Shanghai People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, echoed SingCham Shanghai Chairman Mr. William Chang’s emphasis on collaboration as essential to advancing sustainability goals. Mr. Fu highlighted three key areas for deepened partnership between China and Singapore: harnessing the resources of the Belt and Road Initiative, utilizing complementary expertise such as Shanghai’s strong digital economy foundation and Singapore’s leadership in green finance, and fostering a broad network of cooperative efforts that involve active participation from both nations. He expressed hope that by building on these synergies, China and Singapore can continue their collaboration toward a more inclusive and vibrant future for both countries.

Ms. Ele Ng, Regional Director of the Singapore Global Network (SGN), expressed her encouragement at seeing Singaporeans abroad actively involved in environmental initiatives. She reaffirmed SGN’s commitment to supporting these initiatives by providing networks and resources to further their contributions to sustainability. Ms. Ng highlighted examples of SGN-backed activities, such as sustainability sharing sessions in Vietnam and environmental initiatives via Block 71 Silicon Valley by the National University of Singapore, demonstrating SGN’s dedication to empowering Singaporeans to make a global impact. She also invited friends of Singapore to participate in these events, fostering cross-border collaborations and providing opportunities to engage with Singapore.

Mr. Ong Tze Guan, Chairman of SingCham China, underscored the urgent need for a resilient and forward-thinking sustainability ecosystem, highlighting how today’s environmental challenges demand extensive cross-border collaboration. Mr Ong expressed pride in SingCham’s unique role as a bridge between Singaporean and Chinese industries enhancing the potential for impactful, collaborative initiatives to address these critical issues, and invited all attendees to join SingCham’s sustainability efforts, fostering collective action to build a legacy of positive environmental change for future generations.

王子元先生强调了建立韧性和前瞻性的可持续生态系统的紧迫性，指出当今的环境挑战需要广泛的跨境合作。他为中国新加坡商会在新加坡和中国行业之间发挥的独特桥梁作用感到自豪，这种作用增强了在解决这些关键问题上的影响力和合作潜力。王子元先生邀请所有参会者加入中国新加坡商会的可持续发展努力，共同行动，为后代创造积极的环境变革遗产。

Professor Ding Wenjiang, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, emphasized the promising role of hydrogen energy in advancing sustainability. He highlighted his research team’s work on various applications of hydrogen, such as hydrogen's potential as a clean energy source, its innovative applications in the medical field, and its role as a sustainable fertilizer in agriculture. These initiatives underline hydrogen’s versatile benefits and its critical role in addressing global sustainability challenges.

丁文江教授强调了氢能在推动可持续发展中的前景作用。他介绍了他的研究团队在氢的各种应用上的工作，包括氢作为清洁能源的潜力、在医疗领域的创新应用，以及在农业中作为可持续肥料的角色。这些倡议凸显了氢的多种好处以及其在应对全球可持续发展挑战中的关键作用。

In his keynote, Professor Zou Jianxin, a Changjiang Scholar and Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Materials Science and Engineering, highlighted innovative advancements in magnesium-based hydrogen storage technology. First, Professor Zou addressed the limitations of hydrogen as a clean energy source, such as safety and cost. He then outlined how his team’s research is overcoming these obstacles through the “production-storage-transportation-application” chain for solid-state hydrogen storage, sharing successful pilot projects underway in northeastern China. Professor Zou expressed optimism for a future where hydrogen is more widely adopted as a sustainable energy source, accelerating the path toward a low-carbon world.

In his keynote, Mr. Ang Eng Siong, Chief Executive Officer of OCBC China, presented the bank’s approach to supporting a low-carbon and sustainable future through strategic financial initiatives. He highlighted OCBC’s milestone achievements, such as being the first foreign bank in China to issue a green financial bond in 2022 and its commitment as a signatory to the UN-convened, industry-led Net-Zero Banking Alliance. Mr. Ang explained how OCBC actively supports businesses in their low-carbon transitions by offering sustainable financing products, citing collaborations with prominent Chinese companies as examples. Recognized for its impact, OCBC has been awarded "Best Bank for Sustainable Finance" across multiple markets by Global Finance, underscoring its leadership in advancing sustainability goals within the financial sector.

The first panel on sustainable lifestyle opened with a keynote by Mr. Manoj Mehta, CEO of naked Group who outlined the company’s comprehensive approach to reducing carbon footprints within their resort operations.

Concurrent with the panel discussions, the forum offered fireside chat sessions, giving attendees a chance to dive deeper into the sustainability initiatives of leading companies. These interactive sessions showcased various facets of sustainable practices across industries. Highlights included OCBC China’s Low Carbon Transformation and ESG Disclosure session, which explored how companies can leverage carbon markets and seize green investment opportunities in Southeast Asia, as well as The Institute of Singapore Chartered Accountants (ISCA) discussion on "Empowering a Sustainable Future" by enhancing capabilities to support green transformations. Alibaba Cloud presented "Expanding Green Frontiers," which focused on innovative digital solutions that drive sustainability within industries, and Sino-Singapore Nanjing Eco Hi-Tech Island Development’s (SNEI) Model for Urban Sustainability showcased best practices for building resilient, eco-friendly urban spaces.
