Mrs Jane Arden

Mrs Arden

Mr Banks

Ms Qiu

Ms Chen

Mr Hobourn

Letter from the Headteacher

Mrs Jane Arden

Headteacher

Dear Parents,

The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for reunion, gratitude, and the sharing of joy. While it is a tradition deeply rooted in Chinese culture, it has become a meaningful event for everyone in our community, regardless of where we come from.

Here at LEH Foshan, we celebrate the richness of our diverse cultures. By honouring and participating in each other’s traditions, whether it’s through sharing mooncakes or listening to stories of the festival, we build bonds of understanding and respect. This is what makes our school such a special place — the ability to learn from one another and to celebrate our differences.

As we continue through the school year, I encourage you to carry forward the spirit of unity and curiosity that we have celebrated today. Let us continue to learn from each other, support one another, and strive to be the best versions of ourselves — just as our school’s vision inspires us to do.

I wish everyone a wonderful Mid-Autumn Festival. May the full moon bring you happiness, health, and togetherness.

Best Regards

Mrs Arden

Boarding

Welcome to the New Academic Year at the Boarding School!

by Mr Banks, Deputy Head

As we embark on a fresh academic year, we are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to our 57 new students who have joined the LEH boarding community. It has been a fantastic start, and we are excited to see how quickly our new and returning boarders have settled into their new home. The energy and enthusiasm within our boarding houses are palpable, and it is clear that this year will be a vibrant and enriching experience for all.

This year marks an exciting milestone for LEH with the opening of our brand-new Sixth Form boarding house in the Gryphon block. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to support our senior students as they transition into a more mature and independent phase of their education. The Gryphon block provides a structured yet flexible boarding system, tailored specifically for Sixth Formers, where students enjoy a more adult environment. The aim is to prepare them for the responsibilities and freedoms they will experience at university, offering them the opportunity to take greater ownership of their routines and personal development.

In the Gryphon block, students are given the space to manage their time more independently, with access to quiet study areas, social spaces, and the supportive guidance of our dedicated boarding staff. This environment encourages them to strike a balance between their academic responsibilities and personal growth. We are incredibly proud of how well the Sixth Form students have embraced this new system, showing maturity and readiness for the next stage in their educational journeys.

Across all our boarding houses, the transition into the new academic year has been smooth, and it has been heartening to see how quickly both new and returning students have formed strong bonds. Our boarding team has worked tirelessly to ensure that everyone feels welcomed and supported. From the moment they arrived, students have participated in a range of activities designed to help them settle in, get to know each other, and feel at home in their new surroundings. Whether through group bonding exercises, evening socials, or weekend outings, the sense of community has grown rapidly, and we’re confident this will continue to flourish. A highlight of the term so far has been the welcome BBQ, where boarding students, staff, and their families came together to celebrate the start of the year. The BBQ was a fantastic event, filled with laughter, delicious food, and the chance for everyone to relax and get to know one another better whilst listening to the fabulous band. Events like this are so important in creating the warm, welcoming atmosphere that makes LEH boarding special.

At LEH, we are always striving to enhance the boarding experience, and we are committed to ensuring that our students feel heard and supported throughout the year. With this in mind, we will soon be sending out questionnaires to both parents and students. This feedback is invaluable as it allows us to continuously improve and respond positively to changes in perceptions, opinions, and attitudes. By listening closely to the thoughts and ideas of our boarding community, we aim to make our boarding houses even more dynamic and nurturing environments where all students can thrive.

We look forward to sharing the results of these questionnaires with you in the coming months. Your insights will help shape the future of our boarding programme and ensure that LEH remains a place where students not only succeed academically but also feel deeply connected to their school community.

We are excited about the year ahead and look forward to seeing all that our students will accomplish, both inside and outside the classroom. Thank you for your continued support, and here’s to a wonderful year in the boarding houses!

Mid-Autumn Festival

Mid-Autumn Celebration

by Ms Qiu, Head of Modern Foreign Languages

In this season of golden autumn, the Chinese Department of LEH Foshan with all teachers and students, created a special Mid-Autumn Festival celebration. Traditional culture and modern creativity shone on campus.

The key point was that under Chinese teachers' guidance, primary and secondary students made new mythical stories with imagination. These works showed their understanding and hopes. Now, the excellent ones are displayed in the lobby, forming an attractive corridor. All are invited to appreciate.

On Friday, a great stage show peaked the celebration. The primary and secondary students performed moon-related songs. It included traditional art forms and the erhu, letting the audience enjoy Chinese culture. Interactive games made it fun and harmonious.

As the saying goes, "May we all be blessed with longevity." In this festival of harmony, the school hopes these activities deepen bonds and inspire love for traditional culture. Let's join hands for a better future of culture and dreams.

Lantern Masterclass

by Ms Chen, PA to Headteacher and Administration Manager

This Wednesday, the school welcomed a special master class full of traditional cultural charm. Organised by the Foshan Chancheng Foreign Affairs Office and Chancheng Cultural Centre, renowned Chinese arts and crafts master, and national-level intangible cultural heritage bearer of Foshan lanterns, Yang Yurong, along with her daughter Huang Minyan and granddaughter Lin Yuejia, came together to teach students about the beautiful art of lantern making. The event also attracted coverage from CCTV and Foshan TV!

Foshan lanterns, a traditional craft of the Han people, are renowned for their intricate design and elegance, representing one of the major schools of traditional Chinese lantern art. They are highly popular for their variety, innovative designs, unique decorations, and fine craftsmanship.

During the class, Yang Yurong shared her personal insights into lantern making with students and staff, while Huang Minyan introduced the history and process of Foshan lanterns in English, demonstrating her exceptional skills. In the hands-on session, guided by the three generations of lantern artists, each student created their own lantern. Through this experience, students not only learned the techniques of Lingnan lantern-making but also gained a deeper appreciation for the charm of intangible cultural heritage.

With the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, this lantern workshop gave students the joy of creating their own work while fostering a deeper understanding and love for traditional Chinese culture. In the future, we will continue to provide more opportunities for students to engage with traditional culture, enhancing mutual understanding between Chinese and Western cultures.

Music

by Mr Hobourn, Director of Music

During the recent summer holidays, LEH Foshan Music did not stay silent, and several students took part in international Music and Dance competitions and were successful in their ABRSM, Trinity College London, or Rock School performance and theory grade examinations. Their success was celebrated at the whole school assembly last Friday:

Huge congratulations  to all our LEHF musicians and dancers for their successes during the past few months. We are incredibly proud of you!

The academic year 2024-2025 promises to be busier and even more dynamic and exciting than in previous years at LEH Foshan. The school community has already enjoyed solo performances from Angela W and Lucy W, the two new music scholars, and also by Ryan D and Samantha H.

There is now a brand-new Prep Music Classroom set up in the Prep School (3N19). This is proving to be very successful, and now the prep children no longer need to walk the length of the academic building with their violins for their music lessons. The classroom is equipped with keyboards, and percussion. The Upper Prep Choir is no longer compulsory for the children, but the group has started really well, with some 15 enthusiastic children in years 4 to 6 attending practices before school twice per week.

Friday 13th September saw the first Chinese festival of the year being celebrated in Music, song, and dance at the Mid-Autumn Festival assembly. The three choirs gave their first performances, and there was a first solo performance on the erhu – Sunny S demonstrated a high level of technical mastery in a most brilliant and flamboyant performance.

The first Lunchtime concert of the year will be on Friday 27th September, and will feature performances by mostly new LEHF students, including the piano, drum kit, flute, and clarinet. These concerts are intended for students of all ages and levels, and always provide a moment of calm and relaxation at the end of a busy week. They usually occur on the last Friday of the month.

The first major concert featuring many of the school’s ensembles and some of our fine soloists will be on Friday 18th October in Lingnan Tiandi, 19.30-20.45. Last year’s concert was a huge success, and I am sure this year our musicians will triumph under the lights in Lingnan Tiandi.

On Monday 28th October, LEH Foshan will be hosting a piano/cello concert at 17.00, presented by Ms An Na (piano) and Meidad Yehudayan (violin). This will be a wonderful opportunity to watch two world class musicians in concert. The performance will be followed by a piano masterclass, led by Ms An Na. Further details to follow.

The Music Performance ECA programme continues to grow and develop, and this year ensembles include Senior Choir, Upper prep School Choir (now voluntary to students, with practices occurring at 07.45 to 08.15 on Tuesday and Thursday), the Lower Prep School Choir, Prep School Rock Band, Senior School Rock Band, Senior Strings, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, Prep Percussion Ensemble, and a Lower Prep Basketball Samba Club. I am extremely proud of the depth of musical talent at LEHF and thank the students for their continued commitment to the ensembles, and for your support, dear parents.

LEH Foshan offers a wide variety of instrument lessons, taught by a team of eighteen professional and dedicated teachers. There are still places left for individual music lessons, including piano. Please dear parents, do read through the Music at LEH Foshan brochure. Here you will find all the details of lessons, the Music Academy held on Saturdays during term time, dates of concerts and masterclasses, and the biographies of the Music teachers. If your child wishes to take up an instrument, please do contact Ms Kitty. Mr Hobourn will be very happy to discuss musical opportunities for your child in a meeting.

Class instrument lessons continue in key stage 2 and 3, and students are expected to practise in between lessons, and come prepared to ‘perform’ at each lesson, which are held every two weeks.

  • Year 2-7:  Violin

  • Year 8:  Flute

  • Year 9:Woodwind instruments (clarinet, saxophone, flute)

We look forward to seeing many parents at our concerts this year, witnessing the musical journey of many of LEHF’s students.
