In the Shadow of the Wall explores the lives and memories of villagers living in Shixia and Cuandixia, Ming Dynasty villages built as military fortresses along the Great Wall defending Beijing.

This project has undoubtedly intensified my curiosity, giving rise to an even greater multitude of questions. Perhaps it is because of the interplay between two distinct elements. The Great Wall has a history that is somewhat set in stone; you can read about the principal dynasties and the various sections of the wall. However, the stories and lives of these villagers are another matter entirely—they are all unique, diverse, and without an end. There is no limit to how deeply one can delve into these narratives. Consequently, I feel that our conversations with these villagers have truly amplified my curiosity about their experiences. Living in these historic locales, their interaction with the wall and the experiences they have had are profoundly intriguing to me.
我的好奇心因这个项目而愈发强烈。在拍摄过我的头脑中时刻浮现出新的问题。或许是因为存在两种不同的事物：一方面，长城有着确定的历史，它的故事是既定的，你可以通过阅读关于主要朝代的记载了解长城的不同部分。但另一方面，这些村民的故事和生活独特而多样，并且永不止息地发展着。你可以不断深入挖掘这些故事。我感到我们与这些村民的对话增加了我对他们经历的好奇。他们生活在这些真正具有历史意义的地方。他们看待长城的视角深深吸引着我。

在拍摄筹备阶段，我们已经可以预见到一些挑战。比如，攀登长城的确是一项体力活。在我之前的调研中，我亲自体验了长城的陡峭与高耸。我曾担忧，如果导演携带沉重的摄影设备攀登，可能会遇到不小的困难。但事实上，这些身体上的挑战并不是最大的问题。
更关键的难题其实是采访对象对镜头的恐惧感。记得在我们第二天采访一位老太太时，她与我们的日常交流非常顺畅，毫无障碍。但当摄影机一架起，她突然变得有些拘谨，有些话不敢再说出口。这让我意识到，无论是制片人还是导演，在采访过程中都需要发挥引导作用。我们需要与采访对象建立起信任，让他们感到放松，不感到害怕。然后，随着他们逐渐适应并进入角色，采访就会变得更加顺利，最终更自然地捕捉到他们真实的想法和情感。
